First time for everything

Brett is a brave soul. A week ago we visited some family down here. They have four boys and the mom cuts all their hair for them, simple haircuts, using clippers. I think this got the wheels in Brett's head turning. He decided we should buy clippers and for the cost of two haircuts, I could give him unlimited haircuts. I admit, the idea is quite economical. However, I informed Brett he shouldn't trust me with a set of clippers. The only two times in my life that I ever used them were on my brother and our dog. Both of them ended up with bald spots. Mom, maybe you can speak as to why you allowed me to buzz Trent's head? Anyway, despite my warnings, Brett wanted to take the risk. After watching a YouTube video on men's haircuts and briefly reading the clipper directions, I went to work. I am sure anyone who knows anything about hair cutting could take a close look and find plenty of flaws, but overall, it turned out much better than I would have expected. Brett's hair is a little shorter than he would have asked a pro to do, but hey, beggars can't be choosers. Here's some photos of our haircut adventure:

Before - look at all that hair! It had been August since his last haircut (don't tell him it's been longer for me).

This picture does not do justice to the amount of hair on the floor. There was a substantial amount.
The finished product. Doesn't he look handsome!

I think I'd do it again if he wants me to. Of course, if he wants something more than an almost buzz, he's going to have to talk to someone else. However, I am far less intimidated by those little clippers now.

Growing Up So Fast

This week was quite a growing week for Adie. She has used her potty a few times, although most of the time she's still resistant. We're taking a laid back approach with the potty training so I have no specific timetable (although it would be really nice if she's out of diapers before the new little one comes). I just ask her often if she needs to sit on the potty. She's gone for several hours in underpants though without a miss. She has definitely decided that she doesn't like having anything but a clean diaper, so that's a great step in the right direction. Actually, I think she'd just prefer to not have to eliminate anything, but soon enough she'll catch on that that is just unavoidable and using the toilet is the cleanest way to go. At least, in theory that is what I am hoping to have happen. So far, we're making progress.

One down side to teaching her to hate having a dirty diaper is she'll take the liberty of taking it off herself. Case in point, we put her down for a nap yesterday afternoon and after about 15 minutes heard her screaming bloody murder. Brett went in to check what was wrong and found her pointing to her diaper which was only loosely on her. Then he saw poo sitting on the sheet next to her. She had taken off her diaper and dumped its contents into the bed. He called for back-up and I just thought the whole thing was hilarious, so hilarious I couldn't stop laughing. We made sure Adie knew we weren't mad at her so she stopped crying and now, when we bring up the incident to Adie she starts laughing hysterically about it too. I think she find potty humor very amusing. She also laughs at anything "stinky".

Her other big milestone was moving to a toddler bed. On Saturday, while Adie was supposed to be taking a nap, we heard a loud thud and then more of those bloody murder screams. We both rushed in and found her with a bloody nose. We couldn't evidence to recreate what really happened, but we assume she fell and hit her nose on the side of the crib. I decided that was that, it was time for the toddler bed (I've actually been thinking about it for some time since I was afraid she was getting tall enough she would start climbing out soon anyway). Saturday night was her first night in her toddler bed. She had a little bit of a hard time falling asleep, but once she did, she slept all night without a problem. Her nap yesterday was a different story. After the poo incident I think it was hard for her to calm down. She played in her bed for a while and then all of the sudden I heard a door shut and didn't think it was Brett. A few seconds later I could see a little shadow approaching our bedroom doorway. I knew she could open our doors, but didn't seem to be able to on a consistent basis. Well, it turns out, if she really wants to open a door, apparently, she can (we have those pull down handles which are easy for kids to open and hard to babyproof). Needless to say, she didn't get a nap yesterday, which is making her really cranky today. I am hoping she'll get one today. If not, I will resort to switching her locks so I can lock her in her room. I hate the thought of doing it, but she needs to take a nap or at least have quiet time, so I will do what needs to be done.

Don't Underestimate the Rising Generation

This is an awesome speech about abortion given by a 12-year-old girl. She decided to write and present it for a speech competition for her school. She was advised against the topic because it was so controversial, but she felt very passionate about it and wanted to give the speech anyway. It turns out, originally she was disqualified from the competition because of the controversy, but later they decided to qualify her and give her the first prize. This beats out my 6th grade debate speeches on water rights by 1,000 miles. It gives me hope for the rising generation.

2 Caveats (I always have caveats, don't I?)

1 - I am definitely pro-life, but I hate it when a political candidate is judged solely on his / her stance on the abortion issue.

2 - I do believe a mother who was subject to rape or incest, or whose life is threatened by carrying a child full-term and giving birth should have a choice to abort the fetus. I look at it as a self-defense issue. I don't believe in homicide, but I think if someone can prove the homicide was the result of self-defense it is justified. These situations are very extenuating, but there should be room to make consideration for them.

Pregnancy Brain

Well, now that the cat is out of the bag, I can freely blog about pregnancy adventures. I know you're excited now! Most of my pregnancy so far hasn't actually been worth blogging about. I don't get super sick, but I certainly don't enjoy the first trimester with all the gagging every time I open the fridge or the nights of insomnia, but I am sure you don't want those details, and they will hopefully be a thing of the past very soon.

One symptom I hadn't been noticing until yesterday is pregnancy brain. I definitely feel I have lost many brain cells already. Three things happened yesterday to confirm that to me. The first incident happened while trying to get gas at Costco. We have to pay with our debit card at Costco because we don't have a Costco AmEx. I don't normally use my debit card, and it had probably been at least a month, so when it came time to punch in my PIN my mind went blank. I tried 4 different PIN's to no avail. Finally, the system locked me out and I just decided to find another gas station to try. A short time later, my mom called to inform me a package had arrived for me at her house from Amazon. We've ordered quite a few things from them lately, but I was expecting one in particular yesterday because I needed it today. Sure enough, the object in the package was the Game of Life which I was going to use for Achievement Days tonight. We have both our address and my mom's address on our Amazon account because I shipped a lot of our Christmas gifts directly there. Anyway, there was no way there would be time for my mom to ship it to me in time (without costing an arm and a leg) so I told her to hold on to it until someone gets married to give it as a gift and I'd go buy it elsewhere for today. Now, the funniest thing is that I know I had 3 specific incidents from yesterday to illustrate my loss of brain cells, but I can't for the life of me recall the third one now that I am sitting down to type it, so there is another demonstration. I am not sure why we lose brain cells prior to having children. It seems the more brain power the better to parent with.

Just 2

So, Adie recently turned two. We've been meaning to get out and take some pictures. Well, as today was a Friday I had off, we went out in the evening and took a few pictures. She wasn't super thrilled. She didn't get a good nap today. I wasn't super pleased with how everything came out. However, Sabrina did remind me that I have taken almost no pictures in the last couple of months. It's funny how taking good pictures is a skill that you have to keep up. Anyway, here's a few of the better ones.

Just 4 Minutes

I know many of our readers here don't agree with me on this. In fact, a little over a year ago, I wouldn't necessarily have agreed with myself now on this issue. I beg of you though to give me 4 minutes of your time to watch this and then a couple of extra minutes to think this through, even if it's different than the way you've thought about this before. Let me know what you think.
